Amarillo is the site of the "WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CHUCKWAGON ROUNDUP" to be held annually in June in conjunction with COWBOY ROUNDUP USA, a western heritage celebration in its twenty-first year of producing the premier cowboy-gathering event in the country. The competition attracts chuck wagons from far and wide; participants cook traditional cowboy fare as they did in the days of cattle drives so prevalent in the Texas Panhandle. Entries are judged on flavor and appearance of food, authenticity of restored and replica wagons, and completeness of camp.
In addition to the cooking competition and chuck wagon lunch, the wagon crews compete in an ice-cream "crank-off" on Friday afternoon. All area "kids" from 10 to 17 are invited to compete in the Kid's Cobbler Cooking Competition. Kids do NOT have to be with a wagon crew or ranch. Any aspiring cook aged 10 thru 17 is welcome. Wagon crews will host the apprentice cook and assist in the dutch oven baking to make a cobbler on Friday to go with the ice cream. Wagon cooks and young contestants will be matched by draw at 1:00pm on Friday. There will also be a chuck wagon breakfast and church service on Sunday.
The chuck wagon is said to have originated after the Civil War in the late 1860's when Charlie Goodnight, an Amarillo area rancher, fitted an ex-Army wagon with a chuckbox and cooking gear. The public is invited to visit the campsite anytime. Cooking will start early Saturday morning, so come out and see how it is done.
The 2008 Roundup will be bigger and better as Gayland Ward Wagon Crew, 2007 Champions, returns the Travel Trophy to be awarded to the new Champion. The excitement is growing and the list of awards gets longer by day.
